Tips to Care for Your Teeth After Getting Fillings

Getting a dental filling is a common and important way to treat cavities and preserve your natural teeth. At Brentwood Dentistry, Dr. Neda Naim uses the latest materials and techniques to make the process as smooth and comfortable as possible. But once the filling is in place, how you care for your teeth afterward can make a big difference in your comfort and healing.

Be Mindful for Numbness

Right after your appointment, your mouth may still be numb. Avoid chewing on that side of your mouth until the feeling returns to prevent accidentally biting your cheek or tongue.

Avoid Sticky or Hard Foods at First

Give your filling time to settle by steering clear of chewy candies, ice, or hard snacks for the first 24 hours. Composite fillings harden quickly, but it’s best to be gentle during the initial healing period.

Expect Some Sensitivity

It’s common to have some mild sensitivity to cold or pressure for a few days after getting a filling. Using a toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth can help. If discomfort persists beyond a week, let us know—your bite may need to be adjusted.

Maintain Excellent Oral Hygiene

Continue brushing and flossing as normal, but be gentle around the filled tooth for the initial few days following treatment. Keeping the area clean helps prevent further decay and supports the  healing process.

Watch for Signs of Trouble

If you experience sharp pain, pressure sensitivity that doesn’t fade, or discomfort when biting down, it could be a sign that the filling needs adjustment. Don’t wait—call us so we can make any necessary changes quickly.

At Brentwood Dentistry, we’re committed to providing not only quality dental care, but also the follow-up support you need. If you have questions or concerns after your filling, our team is here to help ensure your comfort every step of the way.
