PREPLESS VS. TRADITIONAL PORCELAIN VENEERS
There are two categories of porcelain veneers in use today – traditional and prepress. With traditional veneers, a small layer of the tooth enamel is removed before the veneer is fitted onto the tooth; however, the goal is always to remove as little of the tooth enamel as possible. Prepless veneers do not require any modification to the tooth surface and can be applied directly to the existing tooth enamel. As such, prepless veneers are fully reversible, while traditional veneers are not.
Prepless veneers are not an option for all patients. Some cosmetic problems cannot be resolved with prepless veneers, in which case Dr. Naim will recommend traditional veneers. When determining whether a patient is a candidate for prepless veneers, Dr. Naim will assess the position and initial condition of the teeth to determine if the desired result can be achieved with prepless veneers.
RESULTS
The process for creating and fitting porcelain veneers is done in three main phases and involves two office visits. During your first appointment, Dr. Naim will examine your teeth, take dental impressions, and make notes about the desired changes. Then Dr. Naim and her specialized team will custom create your porcelain veneers. Finally, you’ll return to Brentwood Dentistry to have your veneers fitted onto your teeth, which can usually be done in less than an hour. The entire process typically takes about two weeks.
Once fitted, porcelain veneers provide a long-lasting result. The number of years that porcelain veneers last varies greatly between individuals, based upon their unique mouth chemistry and dental habits. On average, veneers will last between five and 12 years, with some lasting 20 or more years.
CARING FOR YOUR PORCELAIN VENEERS
Porcelain veneers are very durable and do not require special care. You should care for your dental veneers in the same way you care for your teeth – brush and floss daily and visit your dentist for regular checkups. Dr. Naim also recommends that her patients avoid using abrasive toothpaste, as this can damage the surface of the veneers.
Should your veneers become damaged or worn out after many years of use, they can be replaced. Porcelain veneers can be replaced as a set or individually if damage occurs in localized areas. Your dentist will examine the integrity of your veneers at each visit and should be able to give you an idea about when they will need to be replaced.
