Dental bonding is used to improve a patient’s smile. It can be used on cracked and decaying teeth. It also can be used for cavities. It can be used to change the shape and size of your teeth so you have a more uniform smile! It is also commonly used for receding gums by protecting the exposed teeth!
IDEAL CANDIDATES FOR DENTAL BONDING
Dental bonding can be used to correct a variety of common dental complaints, including:
- Tooth discoloration or stains
- Irregularly shaped teeth
- Chipped or cracked teeth
- Gaps between teeth
- Short teeth
- Tooth decay (composite resins can be used to fill cavities more discretely)
Cosmetic bonding is an appropriate solution for a wide variety of people. Ideal candidates for bonding are individuals who are unhappy with the appearance of their teeth due to any of the reasons listed above. Patients who suffer from severely decaying teeth or gum disease may not be good candidates for cosmetic bonding unless the underlying issues are resolved.
THE PROCEDURE
Dr. Naim is able to perform dental bonding in about 30 to 60 minutes per tooth. The bonding process is performed in two steps:
- Tooth preparation. Dr. Naim will examine your teeth and then use a shade guide to select the composite resin color that best matches the natural color of your tooth. In most cases, dental bonding does not require any trimming or alteration to the existing tooth structure. As such, anesthesia is not typically required, unless bonding is being used to fill a cavity.
- Bonding process. Next, Dr. Naim will gently roughen the surface of the tooth and apply a liquid conditioner to help the resin adhere to the tooth. Then she paints the resin onto the tooth and meticulously shapes it to create the new tooth surface. Once she is happy with the shape, she uses an ultraviolet curing light to harden the resin material. After the resin has hardened, she will check your bite alignment to ensure the bonding has not interfered with your bite. Finally, the tooth is polished to match the sheen of the surrounding tooth surface.
RESULTS
The results of cosmetic bonding are immediate – you’ll leave Dr. Naim’s office with a rejuvenated smile the very same day. Bonding provides long-lasting results, but the exact amount of time your bonding will last depends on your unique mouth chemistry and oral habits. You can expect the bonding material to last between three and 10 years before it needs to be repaired or touched up.
CARING FOR BONDED TEETH
Cosmetic bonding requires no special care. You should follow Dr. Naim’s recommendations for a healthy mouth, which include brushing twice a day and regular flossing. It’s also important to attend regular dental visits, during which Dr. Naim will check the integrity of your bonding and let you know when you’ll need a touch-up.
